Police lay charges after paramedic struck by car

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Calgary police have charged a man following a hit and run involving a paramedic who was responding to an emergency call on Tuesday night on Hillgrove Drive, SW.
Police said an ambulance was stopped with its emergency lights on while a paramedic was loading equipment and preparing to transport a patient.
It’s alleged the driver of a Mercedes-Benz sedan stopped for a moment, but then ignored orders, and quickly accelerated by the ambulance, hitting the paramedic who had not yet cleared the road.
The paramedic continued to help his patient and was then transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers searched the area and found the sedan parked at a nearby home, and a man was arrested inside.
Kenneth Murawski, 69, of Calgary, is charged with one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident that involved bodily harm.
Calgary police are reminding citizens that emergency vehicles with lights activated need to be passed with care.
When emergency personnel are working close to or in a lane of traffic, drivers must follow first responders instructions and stop if it’s not safe to pass.
When passing an emergency vehicle in the lane immediately next to it, drivers must drive no faster than 60 km/h or the speed limit, whichever is slower.
