Get ready for some trash talk at Calgary City Hall

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Members of Calgary City Council will be looking at the merits and negatives of privatizing garbage pickup Wednesday.

Some on council view the idea as a way to save money, but a report coming forward today warns about the quality of service if that were to happen.

That doesn’t mean everyone is on board with this report.

“We’ll have several questions regarding the report,” said Ward 1 Councilor Ward Sutherland.

He believes there are some flaws in this report when it comes to money.

“I think there is actually more savings than what the report says. I think some of the costing is padded.”

He is also favouring a motion to ask for more consultation with the private sector.

“We’ll probably have an amendment at committee saying that we should do some consultation with the industry. Because there are representatives that represent all the different corporations so they are able to give some more accurate numbers.”

There will be significant roadblocks for this idea to go through.

In 2017 there was significant labour pushback from the union as City Council looked at privatizing cleanup of C-Train platforms.

Here is the report going to council.
