Calgary Police Commission on track to name new police chief

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Members of the Calgary Police Commission search committee indicate they are on track to name the city’s new police chief by the end of February.

The police commission will be meeting with their search firm MNP to discuss the final candidates. Brian Thiessen, chair of the commission, is hopeful that will mean interviews in the coming weeks.

“As I’ve said before, when we do actually get the chief will depend a little bit on who we get, who the commission selects, and whether or not they have an exit-timing issue on the backend — if they’re not CPS, or if they have to transition through CPS,” Thiessen said. “I can tell you that we had a great set of candidates — a lot of candidates — so I’m very pleased.”

An extensive list of candidates has been whittled down to a shortlist, but it’s unclear how many people are still in the running to become the city’s next top cop.

The committee’s executive search firm MNP has head-hunted and received external applicants as well.

“CPS is a very attractive police service,” he said. “I think a lot of great candidates are attracted to the platform of CPS, so that’s very exciting for the citizens of Calgary.”

The former chief Roger Chaffin announced his plans last summer to retire citing personal reasons, he had served in the post for three years.
