Calgary hosting largest ringette tournament in Canada

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The largest ringette tournament is Canada is underway in Calgary. Around 2,500 athletes from the east to the west coast have gathered in the City to compete in the 33rd annual Esso Golden Ring tournament.

Judy Renneberg, chair of the tournament, notes the sport is rapidly growing in popularity.

“We have over 30,000 players across Canada with over 6.500 in Alberta alone,” she said. “Ringette Canada just released some statistics that mention that Ringette Alberta is one of the fastest growing associations in the country.”

The tournament also features two National Ringette League teams including the Calgary RATH and Manitoba Intact.

Despite the tendency to liken the sport to hockey because it’s played on ice, she compares the sport more to basketball or lacrosse in terms of style of play and pace.

The championship games on Sunday are free and open to the public and are taking place at the Northeast Sportsplex and East Twin Arenas beginning at 11:00 a.m. until 5 p.m.
