Q&A: Maroon 5’s PJ Morton on Super Bowl and Grammy noms

NEW YORK — PJ Morton is prepping for the biggest week of his life: He’s set to perform at next month’s Super Bowl halftime show as a member of Maroon 5, and seven days later, he’ll attend the Grammy Awards, where he’s nominated for four honours — including three for his work as a R&B singer.

The happiest time of his life has one dark cloud hanging above it: Controversy has surrounded the halftime show since NFL player Colin Kaepernick said he would not stand for the national anthem in protest of racial discrimination against blacks in the United States.

Jay-Z and Rihanna reportedly said no to performing at this year’s halftime show in protest.

Morton says, “This is definitely a controversial year, but it’s something I’ve wanted to do my whole life.”
