Cancer victim’s friends unable to donate to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre because of marijuana restrictions

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Some friends of a cancer patient who died are outraged that the money they raised to go to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre is not being accepted.

It is because the group is associated with marijuana.

Rick Beavers died after his battle with cancer in December.

Patrick Parsons is with the Calgary Cannabis Club.

He says after raising $6,000 the group was told it couldn’t even donate.

“It’s a little bit heartbreaking because we know that Rick had a difficult time fighting cancer this last time and the staff at the Tom Baker were very supportive of him and the use of cannabis in his treatment.”

He doesn’t understand why the centre couldn’t take the money.

“We know $6,000 isn’t a huge amount of money, and they probably have bigger donators, which is fine. Our thing is just to remember our friend by giving back in his name.”

The Alberta Cancer foundation responded via Twitter to some of the complaints saying it still has to amend bylaws in order to catch up with the legalization process.

Parsons said for right now, the group is holding on to the money and looking for another place to donate to.
