Severe weather prompt travel warnings in parts of southern Alberta and BC

EDMONTON – Wind and heavy snowfall warnings in effect across western Alberta and into British Columbia are prompting officials to ask motorists to be prepared or to delay travel.

Environment Canada issued heavy snowfall warnings for Banff and Jasper national parks early today.

The parks are expected to get between 20 and 30 centimetres of snow by Friday morning and the Icefields Parkway has been closed for avalanche control until later that day.

Wind warnings are in place for southwestern Alberta where the Transportation Ministry has noted that winds have been gusting up to 160 kilometres an hour.

Ten to 20 centimetres of snow is expected in the provincial mountain parks.

RCMP and provincial officials suggest postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve sometime Friday.

Police have set up checkstops in southern Alberta to advise larger, light commercial and recreation vehicles not to travel on Highway 22 and Highway 3.

The Trans-Canada Highway between Revelstoke and Golden in British Columbia was closed for avalanche control for most of the day before being reopened around 6 p.m.
