Calgary welcomes first baby of 2019

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – As thousands of Calgarians rang in the new year at Olympic Plaza, the Rockyview General Hospital celebrated by welcoming the city’s first baby of 2019.

Aryia Dockrell was born at one minute past midnight to her proud parents Shauna Mcintyre-Dockrell and Martin Dockrell.

The couple are Irish immigrants who are applying for permanent residency to the country.

Martin Dockrell said he’s pleased to have his daughter born in Canada.

“It gives her a better advantage in life. The economy back home isn’t what it should be or was back in the day. Here, it’s a very good economy, super good health care systems, whopper schooling, can’t ask for much more.”

Mom Shauna still can’t believe that her daughter has the title of Calgary’s New Year’s baby.

“I think I was just super excited to see her and didn’t really register that that (new year’s baby) was a thing. Not sure of the emotion, if there’s a word for it.”

New year’s babies were also celebrated across the country in cities like Saskatoon, Toronto and Montreal.

UNICEF has estimated that 999 babies would be born in Canada on New Year’s Day, 2019.
