Calgary waffle house to shut down

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A Calgary restaurant is be closing down in the New Year, and its owner says it’s due to many factors affecting the City.

Buttermilk Fine Waffles is shuttering its 17 Avenue S.W. location Jan. 1. Sam Friley, the owner of the establishment, said it’s a decision they’ve been grappling with for months.

On the restaurant’s website, Friley blamed economic challenges, property tax increases, and construction for the closure.

According to him, property taxes rose to $25,000. That combined with the lack of density in the area resulted in minimal pedestrian traffic.

Despite the closure, he said it’s probably not the end of Buttermilk as they are looking at opportunities in other cities.
