Calgary Police prepare for a big year in 2019

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Calgary’s interim police chief said he’s already working hard to prepare whoever will fill the shoes of full time chief in the new year.

Last July, Chief Roger Chaffin announced he will retire as January 6, 2019. The man holding the job in the interim, Cst. Steve Barlow, said there’s not one word of advice he wants to give to the new chief of police.

“There are hours of advice that I hope to be able to pass to that new chief to say, these are the issue that are burning in this organization but understand that this organization is resilient, they’re hard working and all they’re looking forward to is moving forward in a positive fashion.”

Barlow said that the force will see a big change in 2019 and is hopeful the community will help them in this time of transition.

“Trust us that we are going to continue moving through this serious change in policing because we’re not the only one who is doing it. The number one thing that we are going to be looking out for is the safety of the public and trust us that we’re still doing that.”

When it comes to who will be named Calgary’s police chief, there’s one important step that Barlow said they need to take.

“Take their time, whoever they may be, internal or external, to go build the relationships with everybody, front line, middle management, civilian and then start looking at what does the future look like for the Calgary Police Service.”
