Chief medical examiner tries to identify woman killed after officer-involved shooting

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — An autopsy could help identify a woman who died after an officer-involved shooting in northeast Calgary on Christmas Eve.

It happened after police tried to stop a vehicle in the northwest end of the city at around 12:30 a.m. on the morning of Christmas Eve, but the driver refused to stop. Two hours later police were called to the northeast community of Falconridge for reports a driver appeared to be intoxicated, was running red lights and making U-turns.

Officers then say the situation “escalated” and the officer fired their weapon. A woman in her 30s was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity is expected to be confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner during an autopsy. A next of kin notification has yet to been completed because the identity of the driver has not been confirmed.

No officers were injured during the incident. The shooter is a patrol officer that has been with the Calgary Police Service for ten years.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called to investigate as per standard practice whenever there is a police-involved shooting.
