Crowds descend on malls for busiest shopping day of the year

CALGARY — Friday is expected to be the busiest shopping day of the year in Canada as procrastinators descend on malls to find last-minute gifts.

With Christmas just four days away, sales are expected to top even Black Friday results. Debit and credit card processor, Moneris expects a spike of around 7 per cent in the volume of sales for the day, similar to sales on Black Friday.

Some shoppers like Katrina are trying to beat the crowds by going early.

“I don’t have the patience for crowds,” she said, anticipating a chaotic day.

One of the reasons for the bump in sales at brick and mortar stores; shoppers have no choice as it’s too late for online gifts to be delivered. Though that isn’t slowing online sales.
