Airdrie residents urged to take precautions to prevent coyote attacks

AIRDRIE (660 NEWS) – Airdrie residents are being urged to take precautions to try and prevent further coyote attacks.

The call comes following attacks on two children in the past week in Nose Creek Park.

A child was nipped in the leg on December 14th. The second incident happened Monday night.

In both cases, the children were not injured and protected by layers of winter clothing.

Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown urged residents to safely dispose of trash.

“They’re scavengers, so it can be garbage, organics, recycling that’s drawing them closer,” Brown said.

Brown said conservation staff will be patrolling areas along Nose Creek Park through the Festival of Lights and until further notice to try and reduce the potential for any attacks.

“We have lots of signage up,” Brown said. “We also have a number of traps set in the area.”

More tips on being safe around coyotes can be found on the City of Airdrie’s website.
