Trudeau responds to Trump’s musings of political interference in Huawei CFO arrest

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – The prime minister is responding to U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese officials over a pair of stories around the arrest of Huawei’s CFO in Vancouver and the detention of a former Canadian diplomat in China.

The arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou has left Canada stuck in the middle of a dispute between China and the U.S. Anger is growing even though the CFO has been released on bail, under strict conditions.

Meng was only arrested due to potential charges in the U.S. and now President Donald Trump says he would intervene in the case if he thinks it would land him a trade deal with China.

Wednesday morning, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau rejected the idea of Canada taking part in that scheme.

“Regardless of what goes on in other countries, Canada is and will always remain a country of the rule of law.”

Meanwhile, Chinese officials claim they have no information on the former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig who has been detained in China.

When asked about that, Trudeau said little — only repeating that his government takes this very seriously, it has been in contact with the Chinese government, and is offering consular assistance to the family.
