Firebug hits the northwest

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The search is on for an apparent ‘firebug’ in the northwest.

The Calgary Fire Department was called out to Mount Pleasant around 3:00 a.m. Wednesday after a resident spotted a couple of garbage bins on fire in the back alley.

Once crews arrived on scene, Battalion Chief Alistair Robin said more bins were found lit up.

“It looks like approximately 12 fires in total were extinguished in about a six-block radius.”

He said Calgary Police assisted by sending out the HAWCS helicopter to track down the additional fires. Thankfully, no buildings caught fire.

“The danger really lies in the proximity of the garbage can to a structure,” said Robin.

Robin said events like this don’t happen often, but when they do it’s usually very easy to tell which direction the offender was headed based on the locations of the fires.

Calgary police are assisting with the investigation into the cause of the fires.
