Airdrie RCMP officers injured during traffic stop

AIRDRIE (660 NEWS) — Two Airdrie RCMP officers are recovering after being injured during a traffic stop early Saturday morning.

At approximately 2:10 a.m. on Dec. 1, the officers were attempting to stop a suspicious vehicle on Yankee Valley Boulevard, the suspect driving the vehicle drove away in a dangerous manner before stopping suddenly at the intersection of Cooper’s Crossing Gate and Cooper’s Drive.

The members exited their police car and as they approached the vehicle, the driver reversed at a high rate of speed into one of the officers and the two police vehicles, it is believed the officer was dragged by the vehicle.

One police vehicle was inoperable. The suspect then fled the scene, hitting an occupied civilian vehicle.

Officers pursued the vehicle until it eventually went off the road into a ditch on Township Road 270 and Range Road 290.

The three occupants were arrested at this location, the driver fled on foot and was located a short time later by an Airdrie police dog.

A second officer was injured during the arrest.

The officer that was hit by the vehicle is at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, he has injuries, but is in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing, more information will be released when it’s available.
