RCMP looking to identify poppy donation box thief

STRATHMORE (660 NEWS) – UPDATE:  Following a tip received and confirmation with various Legions and poppy coordinators, it has been determined that the complaint investigated by the RCMP was unfounded and not a theft.

On Sunday, the RCMP put out a photo of a male identified as a suspect of theft. The RCMP would like to state that no theft occurred. This was a misunderstanding involving a very eager volunteer who went above and beyond and collected boxes that he was not tasked to collect. The money is accounted for and is where it belongs.

The Strathmore RCMP are asking the public for help after two poppy donation boxes were stolen.

RCMP say on Nov. 7 an unknown man attended the Shell Gas Station and claimed to be with the Legion, he then switched out the poppy box, which was full of donations, and replaced it with an empty one.

He then left the gas station and went to the Tim Hortons next door and stole their donation bin. Members say the man is not a Legion employee and wasn’t authorized to pickup any donation boxes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Strathmore detachment at 403-934-3535.
