Many schools not meeting terms of Gay Straight Alliance: Education Minister

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Alberta’s Education Minister is threatening to pull funding from 28 private school organizations that have not complied with rules on gay straight alliances.

David Eggen said while the vast majority of public, separate and charter schools are complying with the Act to Support Gay-Straight Alliances, many private school authorities are still not on board.

“28 out of 94 accredited, funded private school authorities have still not met requirements under the legislation and I have issued ministerial orders establishing standard policies for these school authorities,” Eggen said in a statement released Wednesday,

“School authorities must publicly post the ministerial order and standard policy in a prominent location on their websites. These school authorities must comply with the ministerial order, or they will lose their taxpayer-funded, per-student grant for the 2019-20 school year,” Eggen said.

The Act to Support Gay-Straight Alliances, formerly known as Bill 24, was passed in the legislature last December.

The Act also states that school staff cannot disclose the members of a GSA,
