CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Athletes supporting the Calgary 2026 bid gathered at the Olympic Oval as part of a free family skating event. Calgarians got to skate beside world-class athletes on what has been called the fastest ice on earth.

It was billed as a chance to skate with Olympic and Paralympic athletes, and a chance to urge skaters to vote yes in Tuesday’s plebiscite.

Former Bobsledders Helen Upperton and Jessie Lumsden were showing off a sleigh and some of the tools of the sport. Both are strong supporters of the 2026 games. Lumsden says the Olympics are “a huge opportunity to continue to make our city better.”

He is also pleased with the funding deal to pay for the games saying “the infrastructure and the revitalization of (existing) infrastructure is an excellent deal, ” he said, adding Calgary will never see this level of partnership and collaboration from various levels of government and the International Olympic Committee that are willing to sink money into this city.
