Remember who you’re donating to this Remembrance Day

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – This Sunday, Canadians remember the sacrifice many men and women made for freedom and many might be donating to a veteran or military-affiliated organization.

Before they do, Shawna-Kay Thomas with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) said there are a couple things to keep in mind when donating to any charity for Remembrance Day.

“Not every organization that is soliciting for charity is tax exempt and what we ask that people do is check the CRA to confirm the organization’s tax status before you give.”

Thomas also said that checking the charity’s website can help ensure it’s not a donation scheme.

“(They’re) promising greater returns than what your donations are, extravagant things that they are planning to do with your donation. You want to make sure that these things are actual, practical things that can be done when you give. If it’s too extravagant, if it’s too good to be true than maybe it is.”

Thomas also suggests writing cheques to charities and not an individual and make sure online payments are secure.
