A Calgary MLA has been booted from the NDP caucus after complaining about a “toxic culture” within the party.
Calgary East representative Robyn Luff issued a letter Monday claiming she was bullied by leadership and that she couldn’t properly represent her constituents because of strict party controls.
Mount Royal University Political Scientist Dwayne Bratt says it’s a common complaint from back-benchers.
“We see complaints from back-benchers in all parties federally and provincially that they don’t have a say and that there are too much party supply and the role of party whips negates their independent voice,” said Bratt.
In a late night release, the NDP says fellow MLAs have lost confidence in Luff, and the decision was made Monday night to turf her in a meeting.
Luff has not said what she will do next.
