Canmore council votes in Olympic bid

CALGARY (CITYNEWS) — Canmore town council will decide Tuesday whether or not they want to take part in the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

The town would host 61 events including all of the biathlon and cross-country events if Calgary decides to move ahead in the bidding process.

Canmore Mayor, John Borrowman, said he sees positive legacies that would come with the games, but he understands there is more than just that to consider.

“Is the town of Canmore prepared for 2026? I would say there is a lot of work to be done between now and then.”

Olympic curling gold medalist John Morris stated he wants to see Calgary and Canmore take on the games.

“It’s been a little disheartening over the last few weeks to see kind of how city council has handled things and sort of hearing some more negative connotation around the bid.”

WATCH: Canmore residents spoke at a lengthy town hall last week, with the question of Olympic involvement top of mind.

The town would need to create a new plaza for medal ceremonies, an athlete’s village, and upgrades to the Nordic Centre would be in order.
