Bail granted to teen charged in shooting of German tourist on Alberta highway

CALGARY – A Calgary judge has granted bail to a teenager charged in the August shooting of a German tourist.

Alberta provincial court Judge Peter Barley granted the youth’s release on condition he pay $2,500 cash and live with his grandparents from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation west of Calgary.

He’s to remain in the home, be under constant supervision and abstain from drugs or alcohol.

Defence counsel Balfour Der says there are some possible flaws in the prosecution’s case, but the teen will have to abide by over a dozen conditions.

“Including a 24-hour house arrest, which will keep basically under lock and key unless he’s at school or in the company of an adult. So he’s not walking free, so to speak, he’s out of custody, but he’ll, in essence, be under house arrest.”

Der also credited the judge for navigating the issue carefully, as it would be uncommon for a young offender to remain in custody for months on end.

“But it’s also why there are such strict conditions because the public would be otherwise concerned that you have this person who allegedly shot a tourist for no good reason — it’s a very serious crime.”

The teen, who turns 16 on November 2, will next appear in court in Calgary on November 8 on lesser charges, including possession of stolen property.

He will be in Cochrane court later in the month on the serious charges, including attempted murder.

A 60-year-old tourist was driving a black Dodge Durango with his family near Morley, Alta., when he was shot on Aug. 2.
