Skier hurt in Banff avalanche

BANFF (660 NEWS) – One skier has been hospitalized, another two have minor injuries, following an avalanche Monday in Banff National Park.

The group was skiing on Mount Patterson, north of Bow Summit, on the Icefields Parkway when they were hit by a size 2 avalanche.

They were swept 100 metres down a steep gully.

Parks Canada visitor safety specialists were alerted through an inReach device the group was carrying.

One skier, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to Banff Mineral Springs Hospital with head injuries.

The other two in his group have minor injuries. They were wearing helmets.

According to officials, the group of 3 skiers were well prepared and had the right equipment with them to alert first responders.

They’re reminding visitors who travel into the backcountry that they are responsible for their own safety.

Early season conditions are in full swing and Parks Canada adds they don’t have sufficient data to rate the avalanche danger on a daily basis.

“Even though it is only October, the alpine snowpack is deep and avalanche hazards exist,” writes spokesperson Lesley Matheson in an email. “Expect fresh slab avalanches following storms and avoid steep, sun-exposed slopes.”

“Safety is a top priority for Parks Canada, Always remember to carry the appropriate gear (shovel, probe, beacon and communications device) and to be aware of your surroundings while travelling in the backcountry.”
