Three-year-old boy killed in pedestrian collision

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Calgary Police say it happened at around 8:40 a.m. Friday on Valleyview Rd near Veiner St.

The boy was taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition where he later died.

Sgt Colin Foster says an eastbound Ford Focus struck the child.

“The vehicle involved stayed at the scene and police don’t believe that speed, alcohol, or drugs were a factor in the collision. We are still looking for witnesses who may have seen the collision,” said Foster. “At the moment it appears it was just the child, his mother and the vehicle involved at the scene. We have no other witnesses at this time.”

Foster cautions parents to be cautious when kids are near roads.

“It’s always more concerning when children are involved. Because children can’t make those estimations of vehicle speeds like adults can do because they don’t have the experience. We really encourage parents to really know where their kids are, make sure you are with your children when crossing the road. Make sure that they are aware of vehicles when they are moving. Teach kids to cross roads properly and safely.”

He included a few tips to make things safer.

“Before you cross the road, make sure that you look at the vehicle’s driver so that you make some form of eye contact, so that you can see them and they can see you.”

It’s the second time this week a young child has been killed in a pedestrian collision. A six-year-old girl died after being hit by a CTrain on the south end of the city on Monday.
