Calgary Police Union challenges CPS off-duty cannabis ban

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – We can expect a sit-down between the Calgary Police Service and its union in the coming days over a cannabis ban for officers.

This news after the association filed a grievance on Thursday.

Calgary Police Association President, Les Kaminski, says there are provisions in the criminal code for testing and this ban goes too far.

Kaminski says the policy on substance use for members already exist and this is just a new substance.

“There is no precedent (for the ban) and there’s not a lot of science behind it.”

Police officers already know they can’t come into work if they are impaired.

“I know members wouldn’t allow that to happen. If your teammate showed up impaired by whatever, they’d say ‘you are not riding with me, go home.'”

He believes that sit-down could happen as early as next week.

The long-time officer is hopeful the CPS executive will re-visit the ban that says officers can’t consume, even off the job.

“Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, it would be inappropriate to comment at this time,” says CPS Spokesperson Michael Nunn.
