Council could resurrect arena talks with the Flames

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Calgary city council will discuss re-igniting talks with the Flames Tuesday, armed with fresh ideas for a new arena.

And, the Olympic Secretariat says any new facility could be incorporated into plans to host the 2026 Winter Games.

New concept drawings were shown to the Event Centre Assessment Committee Friday of a potential facility in Victoria Park.

It takes a different approach than CalgaryNEXT, and is designed to fit into the re-development of the area.

The proposed event centre would take up less space with the same number of seats, with the idea being that it wouldn’t overwhelm every other building around it.

A new facility could be a game changer if Calgary hosts the Olympics.

Right now, two new venues would have to be built: a field house and a mid-sized arena.

Current plans also include renovations to the Saddledome.
