Natural gas leak in Canmore

Residents in a northeast section of Canmore are being asked to shelter in place following a natural gas leak along 17 Street.

No word yet on what could have caused the break but those who live between 11 Avenue and the river, Woodlands and Woodside Lane are being asked to keep their windows and doors shut. If they smell gas, they’re urged to call 911.

Traffic is being rerouted around the scene by first responders.

ATCO is on site and is hoping to have the gas turned off at the scene by around 4:10 pm.

Children were escorted from school to their homes by emergency services personnel.

Town officials were unsure of how long the repairs will take.

UPDATE 4:25 p.m. ATCO is still on site trying to shut off the gas. No word yet on a new timeline as to how long repairs will take.

UPDATE 4:45 p.m. Crews have closed the gas leak and according to town officials everything is under control. Emergency Services are on scene ensuring an orderly “return to normal” and are working to re-open the road closures. Houses in the area still have access to natural gas for their appliances.

UPDATE 5 p.m. The roads have re-opened at 17th Street and 11th Avenue and the neighbourhood is once again accessible. The gas leak has been fixed and residents are being told they can safely use their appliances.
