Watchdog doing ‘serious and sensitive’ investigation of Edmonton officer

EDMONTON – Alberta’s police watchdog agency says it is continuing what it calls a “serious and sensitive investigation” of an Edmonton police officer.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says in a news release that its members arrested a member of the Edmonton Police Service on Thursday as part of an ongoing investigation.

The release says no charges have been laid, and that no further information will be released at this time.

On Friday afternoon, a spokeswoman for the agency said the officer has been released.

The Edmonton Police Service says in a statement the officer has been relieved from duty without pay, pending confirmation from the city’s police commission.

It says the watchdog agency is leading the investigation and that police won’t be commenting further.
