Calgary Zoo celebrates 100,000 members

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The Calgary Zoo is celebrating a milestone Friday.

The attraction is welcoming its 100 thousandth member and says never before in the zoo’s history has the membership base been so strong.

“Being a member is really telling us that you want to be a bigger part of the zoo, you want to come more often, support our programs,” explained Trish Exton-Parder with the Calgary Zoo.

That, of course, could be attributed in part to the four very popular pandas who moved into the Panda Passage last spring, since then Exton-Parder says 25,000 memberships have been purchased.

Susan Mendes says her and her children were walking into the zoo Friday morning, planning to renew their membership when they were approached and told the news.

She will be making use of her complimentary pass to the zoo for a year, not only because her children enjoy it, but also to help her youngsters learn about endangered animals.

“We think its important for our kids to know about the animals that are around us, but also internationally and especially those that are endangered, or might need help,” she said, adding there’s always something new, “The exhibits are always changing so this year obviously it’s been the pandas, but the lemurs have been very popular as well.”
