Notley defends her pipeline actions

CALGARY – Alberta Premier Rachel Notley is rejecting accusations she waited too long to publicly take on Ottawa over legislation her government believes could seriously harm the oil and gas industry.

Notley says she has been working with the federal government for months to fix the two bills, saying that is the best way to get things done.

One bill would ban tanker traffic on the northern BC coast and the other would revamp how energy projects are reviewed.

Both bills have passed the Commons and are now in the Senate.

Notley says Alberta has major concerns with the energy legislation, known as Bill C-69, and is sending two of her ministers to Ottawa to speak to it.

Alberta’s United Conservative Opposition has been pushing Notley’s NDP for months to rally public support against Bill C-69.

Kenney says Notley has been quiet because she cut a deal with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to give him a wide berth on climate issues in return for his government approving the Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion.

A court ruling has put the expansion on hold.
