Volunteers pushing for Veterans Food Bank to reopen after abrupt closure

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Patrons of the Veterans Food Bank in Calgary where given quite the shock when they arrived at the doors of the charity only to find it was closed.

The food bank was scheduled to close in January but has shut down months earlier than scheduled.

A group of volunteers has been rallying to open a new service before the existing it closed.

According to a spokesperson, a group of veterans went to the charity recently only to be locked out. Alan Reid told CityNews the closure happened last Thursday but there was no notice from the Poppy Fund or Legion Command.

“We don’t know why they’ve done it. It’s for whatever reasons they’ve come up with,” he said. “I don’t think it’s a wise decision so we’re going to do what we have to do to make sure it opens again.”

He said once they heard about the impending closure they knew something had to be done.

“We and the people we deal with on a day-to-day basis say this just can’t happen, it’s a definite need. The veterans need to be taken care of with respect and dignity and we’re going to make sure that happens.”

The new food bank volunteers say they’ll just have to move up their timeline and try to secure a lease at the same location.
