Calgary Police Commission to choose interim leader, search for next chief continues

The Calgary Police Commission is planning to choose an interim leader next week, as they expect the search for the city’s next police chief won’t be complete by the time current Chief Roger Chaffin steps down in early January.

“I expect that we will need an interim chief at some point. Regardless, Chaffin will be done at some point, and I would expect the search to take longer than Chief Chaffin is here,” Brian Thiessen, chair of the commission, said on Tuesday.

He added finding Chaffin’s full replacement will take five to six months.

The commission is currently choosing an executive search committee to carry out application responsibilities including advertising the position.

“The process has closed for receiving applicants to be the search firm of choice. We’ve received a number of excellent applicants from executive search companies,” Thiessen said.

Thiessen adds that public opinions, which have been collected over the years through annual surveys, will also be factored into search efforts.

“We receive a lot of feedback from the public on what they expect from the service, and so the commission has years of data, and we can see trends on what the public is looking for in their police service.”
