Thirty-eight years of the Terry Fox Run

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It’s the time of year where we lace up our best sneakers for another Terry Fox Run. This year will be the 38th year the event has been running.

Wendy Kennelly, Provincial Director of the Terry Fox Foundation, says all of those years, all of those donations, have made a huge difference.

“Generally overall in terms of pediatric cancer when Terry was going through treatment we exponentially changed the lives of children surviving cancer from 20 per cent survival rate to 50 per cent survival rate,” she said.

And the donations are not just coming from our country.

“$23.9-million was raised across the country [last year] and we actually have 54 international runs that also raise money for cancer research,” she said, adding that all the money raised for research goes to the specialists at the Terry Fox Research Institute.

The institite just celebrated its 10th anniversary.

The run begins Sunday morning at Fort Calgary. Registration is at 8:30 and the run itself starts at 10– it’s just one of 71 runs in Alberta this weekend.

Kennelly says it’s absolutely amazing to see the run coming back year after year.

“And that so many young people are still so engaged in the journey terry made for Canada and for cancer survivors.”
