Calgary Food Bank hopes to collect half-a-million pounds of food

A massive effort Saturday to help the Calgary Food Bank.

Over 7,000 volunteers will be collecting non-perishables as part of the annual one-day city-wide food drive.

Food bank Spokeseperson Shawna Ogston said they are still putting together over 5,000 hampers every month.

“The great thing is that we’re not seeing the incredible increases in demand that we’ve had in previous years, but of course things have not dipped down,” she said.

She said they typically collect about a half-a-million pounds of food during this one-day event, which helps to keep their shelves stocked for the next few months. She said they are especially hoping for things like juice, beans, and pasta.

Anyone who didn’t get a chance to put non-perishables on their doorsteps Saturday morning can help by dropping off food at Sobeys, Safeway and Co-op stores, or by going online and donating money.

“For every $1 that’s donated we can leverage that into $5 worth of food,” Ogston points out.
