Wildlife experts say stay clear of elk during rutting season

You’ve heard warnings about bears, but what about elk?

Wildlife experts say people should steer clear of the animals because it is rutting season.

Banff National Park Wildfire Ecologist Jesse Whittington said bulls can be extremely aggressive as they look for mates.

If you are confronted by a bull, Whittington said the best thing to do is to get behind a large object like a tree, or vehicle.

“We recommend people maintain at least a distance of 30 metres from the elk and you never want to get between a male and female elk, and that includes — do not park your car between a male and female elk because the bulls may charge and damage your vehicle,” he said.

He added it’s also important to keep dogs on a leash if you’re in an area where elks are present.
