The pot stores coming to Alberta will be ‘pun-filled’

There will be a lot of pun-filled names coming to the province when cannabis becomes legalized next month outlined in a recent Maclean’s article.

The province’s regulator, the AGLC, has released the list of applicants looking to open to our sister publication Maclean’s and the names don’t disappoint.

There are a few rules and these ‘would-be’ retailers can’t have any reference to intoxication (names like high, chronic, or stoned) or they can’t suggest anything pharmaceutical (like Health, Clinic, Dispensary or Med.)

Retailers also can’t use “Alberta” in the name.

“I’m a sucker for puns, so Gramsterdam I liked and Pottersville becasue I do have a soft spot for ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,” Markusoff said when asked which ones were his favourite.

Gramsterdam, if approved, would be a store in Forest Lawn.

A few of the names include Blaze 420 Today, Cloud-420, Bob’s Buds and Smiley’s Cannabis.

The number of private outlets is expected to be about 250 in the first year.

Recreational cannabis becomes legal in Canada on October 17, 2018.
