City has no plan to renovate pools following new Swimming Canada guidelines

There will be no renovations at 11 pools in Calgary to match new Swimming Canada guidelines for pool depth when it comes to diving.

Under the new guidelines, the pool must have a depth of 1.35 metres at starting blocks and 1.22 metres for pool deck diving.

The city’s Aquatic Operations Coordinator, Jack Birkett, said while there will be no renovations, there will be assessments over the next month and a half.

“It’s just meshing what our pool design is against (what) the Swimming Canada ideal designs are so we can determine what activities can happen at which site,” said Birkett.

The new guidelines come in the wake of one person being seriously injured at a pool in Saskatchewan.
