Calgary community ties yellow and green ribbons around trees to honour Broncos

A southwest Calgary community is showing support as the Humboldt Broncos begin a new hockey season.

A group in Woodcreek began tying yellow and green ribbons around trees in the neighbourhood Thursday.

Project Organizer Judy McKearney said it’s called Trees of Love.

“For those that were lost and also all the people that were affected by this horrific accident,” she said.

Sixteen people were killed and 13 injured when the Broncos’ bus crashed in April.

Thursday, Grade 4 to 6 students, Guides, Scouts and members of the Southwest Hockey Association paid tribute.

They’ll be meeting again Friday and Saturday.

“And we’ll have flagging material and small maps for them to go out and wrap the trees,” McKearney said.

The Humboldt Bronco Alumni Association has endorsed the initiative.
