City calling off proposed public cannabis consumption sites

WATCH: CityNews reporter Michael Lumsden has more from city officials on ending the idea of public consumption sites:

The City of Calgary is going back to the drawing board for public cannabis consumption sites.

All four proposed locations are off the table for now.

Over 1,800 Calgarians took part in the recent public cannabis consumption engagement survey. The “vast majority” stated they were against the sites.

The green spaces were in Bridgeland, Inglewood, and Ogden, including an area in Murdoch Park on 7A Street N.E. Criteria was the spaces must be a certain distance from residences, schools, playgrounds, or family-friendly attractions and not in off-leash or sensitive natural areas.

Only one city councillor had come forward with proposed cannabis consumption areas: Ward 9’s Gian-Carlo Carra.
