Proposed Calgary Olympic hosting plan to be released Tuesday

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It’s make or break at City Hall Tuesday.

The Calgary 2026 Bid Corporation is outlining its plan to host the Olympics.

The 83-page document will either convince council members or deter them from moving forward toward a November 13 plebiscite.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi said Calgarians are promised a more detailed look at the city’s venues, the cost of the Winter Games, and an update on funding negotiations.

But, there’s still no solid monetary commitment from the Federal Government or the Government of Alberta.

“I’m confident that the province will come to a final decision, well in advance of the plebiscite, and I have no reason to believe that will not involve significant funding of the project,” Nenshi said.

Calgarians told CityNews, there are a lot of questions they want answered.

“I don’t think it’s a waste of money, I think it would be really good for the city. However, if our tax dollars go up again because of the Olympics, I don’t agree with having it,” one man said.

“I’m kind of on the fence. It’s good and it’s bad. It’s expensive, and we’re living in a really hard economic time, but it will bring good economics to the city, right?” another woman said.

After the presentation, councillors will hold a closed-door meeting, then vote in public on whether they have enough information to keep going, or if Calgary should bail on the idea of hosting the Olympics altogether.
