Charges laid in death of three-year-old Calgary girl

A Calgary man has been charged in connection to the death of three-year-old Ivy Wick last September.

The girl was found injured in a home along Rundlehorn Drive N.E. and later died. Police say Ivy’s mother and her boyfriend were the only ones with direct access to the girl on the day she was taken to hospital.

The medical examiner stated Ivy’s body was covered with injuries believed to be caused by physical abuse.

Last week, homicide detectives made an appeal for more information.

Twenty-five-year-old Justin Paul Bennett has been charged with second-degree murder.

Police say he was in a relationship with the girl’s mother but is not her biological father.

“Our homicide investigators have worked tirelessly to hold the alleged offender accountable and lay charges in this case,” said Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta of the CPS Homicide Unit. “No matter how much time has passed, we are committed to making sure that each homicide is investigated thoroughly to bring justice for the victims. We were fortunate to have the assistance and cooperation from multiple agencies to bring this file to a close, including resources from the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre.”

Bennett made his first court appearance Monday.

Investigators are not looking for any additional suspects in relation to this case.
