CityNews launches in Calgary

CALGARY – Get ready for even more local news content in the Calgary market.

The wait is over, and tonight’s the night CityNews Calgary goes live with its 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. broadcasts.

Whitney Deane, the supervising producer for CityNews Calgary, said the focus is going to be on local content.

“You’re going to see a lot more of our CityNews logo out in the community. We’ll be doing live interviews and will be doing stories that matter to people.”

She said one way that will happen is by not having an anchor to introduce the news.

“The focus ends up being on the stories and getting those reporters out of behind of an anchor desk and out into the community,” Deane said.

The CityNews Calgary team has been tirelessly working to prepare and rehearse for this launch. For the past month, video journalists have been out in the field, reporting on the stories important to the Calgary region.

“Technology has changed,” Deane explained.

“We are able to use not just cameras, but we’re having video journalists who are shooting the stories (in different ways), researching them, reporting them and then editing them. That allows us to really also take you into the story and show you behind the scenes.”

And a lot of this content has already been running on Breakfast Television Calgary and 660 NEWS.

Montreal and Vancouver are also launching new 6:00 and 11:00 p.m. programs, in addition to the shows already airing in Toronto, Edmonton, and Winnipeg.

You may have already heard some of CityNews Calgary’s reporters on the airwaves. As sister stations, we work together closely. You’ll likely hear more from their reporters through us, but you’ll even get to see some of 660 NEWS reporters on their shows, too.

“We’re going to be building on what 660 already has. You guys get a ton of listeners who call in and give you those tips. We’re going to be taking those tips and working together with you guys as well and creating a story so people can feel like their voices are being heard and that we’re getting into the community,” Deane added.

If you can’t make it home to watch the 6:00 and 11:00 p.m. broadcasts from your TV at home, you can catch the live stream on our website.

Rogers is the parent company of both CityNews and 660 NEWS.
