Calgary Highland Games 105th anniversary

One of the oldest gatherings in North America, the Calgary Highland Games, is celebrating its 105th anniversary.

The event started in 1913 and there are three parts that make up the highland games: heavy events, highland dancing and piping and drumming.

President Kirsty Thackery says, the games have a little something for everyone.

“The name Calgary actually came from Scottland. I just find that it doesn’t matter who you are, everyone has this little piece of Scottish history in them.”

Thackery adds, there are many different events that are fun to watch.

“At the heavy events, you’ll see certain things like the Caber Toss, or the Sheaf Toss and in highland dancing, you’ll see everybody from the age three and up all the way through to adults. We have a 50-year-old dancer competing this year.”

She says, there will be a ton of local food vendors including a haggis truck.

The event has a new location this year at the Calgary Rugby Union in the southeast.
