Pride celebrations underway in Calgary

A rainbow flag will be raised Monday afternoon as a tribute to Calgary Pride celebrations.

Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism says this event represents the Alberta Government’s ongoing commitment to inclusion and L.G.B.T.Q. rights in the province.

Pride celebrations will take place on the McDougall Centre grounds from noon until 1 p.m.; festivities include music and food trucks.

Another pride related event took place on Sunday. The National Music Centre hosted a fun-filled, family-friendly Love, Community, and Acceptance Party, which included exhibitions and tours, a kindness graffiti wall, L.G.B.T.Q awareness and educational activities, performances by local drag queens and kings, and storybook readings about gender, self-love and acceptance.

“Just be proud of who you are, and accept diversity and just be understanding of everyone’s conditions. It’s pride, so you just need to love,” said performer Elektra Kute.

Calgary’s Pride celebrations continue throughout the week culminating Sunday in the big event — the pride parade.

This year’s parade kicks off at a new time, 11 a.m., beginning in the East Village and travelling west along 6 Avenue to 6 Street southwest, then north to 2 Avenue southwest.
