12-year-old injured by Calgary police: ASIRT

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a 12-year-old boy suffered a skull fracture while in the custody of Calgary police.

On Tuesday evening, officers responded to a mental health call concerning the boy, who was described as uncontrollable and causing damage to a home.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says he had just returned to the home after being with other family members but was apparently off his medication for several days.

When officers arrived at the southwest Calgary address, he was confined to a locked bedroom, and while escorting him to a cruiser, he struggled with officers and sustained a serious head injury.

He was transported to hospital by AHS Emergency Medical Services, where it was determined he suffered a skull fracture.

ASIRT will look into whether there was any wrongdoing on the part of police.
