City committee talks public engagement about potential Olympic bid

It’s unclear whether a public hearing or town hall may be held ahead of a November 13 Olympic plebiscite.

A committee met Tuesday to discuss engaging with Calgarians on a 2026 Winter Games bid.

Council has the option to bail early next month, but some are convinced there are still too many unknowns to make a decision.

Coun. Peter Demong called a city-commissioned survey “not very helpful,” saying the results seemed to be based only on feeling.

“I’m getting more and more increasingly very concerned, as I’m sure as almost everybody here is, about the lack of information and the amount of time that we’re going to have to disseminate the information that we do have in a fair and robust manner going forward,” he said.

The city solicitor says the information is out there and will be presented by the Olympic Bid Corporation September 10.

But Demong says he’d be incredibly frustrated as a member of the public.

Meanwhile, Calgary 2026 CEO Mary Moran says “significant progress” was made last week with the federal and provincial governments when it comes to finances.
