ASIRT clears officer of shooting death in 2016

Alberta’s police watchdog has cleared a Calgary officer of any wrongdoing, after she shot a woman to death in November 2016.

Two officers were responding to a call on 11th avenue southwest, where the 27-year-old was seen running toward an apartment building with two large knives.

Police say the woman then sprinted toward the police vehicle, and tried to get in the passenger side door.

ASIRT Executive Director, Susan Hughson, said the officers yelled at the woman multiple times to stop.

“The first officer was about to direct the woman to drop the knife for the fourth time, when she saw the woman move towards the interior of the police vehicle and her partner, causing her to fire two shots from the service pistol,” said Hughson.

She added, officers had little time to think, as the whole incident unfolded in less than 20 seconds.

Despite her finding, Hughson said the woman’s death was a tragic loss for those who loved her.
