Red Cross Alberta lending hand after massive N.E. blaze

The Red Cross is responding following a devastating house fire in northeast Calgary.

Twenty-one people cannot return home following the blaze that broke out Monday night in the 200 block of Taravista Drive N.E.

The organization says it is assisting eight people with food, clothing, lodging and personal services.

“Generally we first work with the families to see if they have any friends and family that they would like to stay with,” Red Cross spokesperson Melissa Fougere explained. “If not, we will support them with lodging in the local area to make sure they are close to home.”

The majority of the people impacted by the two-alarm blaze did have family or friends to help, so they did not need the organization’s assistance.

She added, typically, the Red Cross steps in for up to 72 hours. If the fire victims need further support, the organization will work with them on an individual basis.

No one was hurt in the blaze. The cause is under investigation.
