Councillor’s motion to make Olympic Bid Corporation subject to FOIP laws voted down

Councillor Jeromy Farkas is not pleased his motion regarding the Olympic bid corporation was voted down the same day a plebiscite question and date was approved.

The motion called for the city to ask the province to change laws which would make the BidCo subject to the same freedom of information laws that apply to public bodies in the province.

“We shouldn’t take politicians and well-intentioned special interests at their word but we should have some authority, some law, some governance in place so there is some sort of higher power or check in balance to ensure they’re acting properly — especially when it comes to Calgarians’ tax money,” Farkas said.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi said instead of getting the province involved, council has encouraged the BidCo to voluntarily release financial and other information.
